The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I will preface this review by stating that I am very reluctant to read mysteries as the formula is not one that appeals to me. Despite this I wanted to read this book for 2 reasons:

1. It is insanely popular.
2. I wanted to read something in French and this was easy to find.

I will not spend a lot of time summarizing the plot but you can read it here. The story is interesting enough and the characters are fairly believable but my main issue is the same as will most mysteries. The first 1/3 of the book establishes the mystery, the 2/3 investigates the mystery, the protagonist has a eureka moment and the last 1/3 he pieces it together for us. This book was too formulaic and the addition of the Wennerström affair at the end was unnecessary. I did not care about Wennerström after Blomkvist sorts out the Vanger mystery.

This is a decent mystery if that is the genre you enjoy but not a great book. Overall the book was interesting enough and it did make the commutes on the bus more tolerable but the ending soured me a bit and I am not sure that I need to continue the trilogy. I would give “Les Hommes qui n’aimaient pas les femmes” or “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” a 6 out of 10.
